Circles
A solo exhibition of geometric paintings exploring Islamic and sacred geometry and experiments in watercolour paint making by artist Safira Ali.
From Saturday 22nd - Sunday 31st August 2025, at StudionAme, 2 Brougham St, Leicester, LE1 2BA
The Circles collection brings together works that investigate geometry and heritage through the recurring motif of the circle.
Drawing on influences from Islamic and sacred geometry, architecture, and traditional patterns, the collection reflects Safira’s interest in how shape and symmetry can communicate ideas of identity and place.
Each piece explores the circle as a symbol of continuity and connection. Through precise construction, layered forms, and considered colour palettes, the works reference Safira’s experiences across regions rich in geometric traditions, including Morocco, Andalusia, Turkey, Pakistan, and France.
While grounded in traditional principles, the collection maintains a contemporary approach. Some works emphasise technical accuracy and symmetry, while others introduce softer transitions and organic elements, creating a balance between structure and intuition. This duality speaks to Safira’s broader practice, which often examines how heritage can be honoured and reinterpreted within modern contexts.
The Circles Collection invites viewers to consider the universal nature of circular geometry and its importance across cultures, histories, and personal narratives.
